What Decides the Price of a Solar System?

Two homes asking for the same 3 kW system can get quotes ₹30,000 apart. These are the things that make the difference:

  • System size (kW). The biggest factor. Price per kW falls as systems get bigger, because the fixed costs — design, approvals, net meter — are shared over more panels.
  • Panel type. TOPCon and bifacial panels cost a little more than Mono PERC but make more power from the same roof. Subsidy systems must use DCR (Made-in-India cell) panels, which cost more than imported-cell panels.
  • Inverter. A single string inverter is the usual choice for homes. Microinverters or optimisers cost more but help on partly shaded roofs.
  • Mounting structure. A flat RCC roof needs a standard galvanised structure; elevated structures (so you can use the roof below) and tin-shed mounting change the price.
  • On-grid, hybrid or off-grid. On-grid systems with net metering are the cheapest per unit. Adding batteries (hybrid or off-grid) adds roughly ₹40,000–₹1,00,000+ depending on capacity.
  • Your state and DISCOM. Net-meter charges, approval fees and logistics vary by state, and some states add their own subsidy on top of the central one.

Solar Panel Price vs Solar System Price

When people search for the solar panel price, what they usually need is the price of a complete solar system — panels alone can’t power your home. A system adds an inverter to turn the panels’ DC power into AC, a mounting structure, cabling, earthing and surge protection, and a net meter so your DISCOM credits you for the power you export. All of the prices on this page are for complete, installed systems.

How the Subsidy Brings the Price Down

Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, eligible homes get ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third — ₹78,000 at most, paid straight to your bank account after the system is commissioned. To qualify you need DCR panels and an MNRE-registered vendor like Bhanu. Read the full solar subsidy process.

Is Rooftop Solar Worth the Cost?

For most homes, yes. A system typically pays for itself in 3–5 years after subsidy, then keeps producing almost free electricity for another 20 years. Put your own bill into the solar savings calculator to see your payback period and 25-year savings.

FAQ

Solar Price Questions

What is the price of a solar panel system for a home in India?

A complete on-grid rooftop system typically costs ₹65,000 – ₹80,000 for 1 kW and ₹5 lakh – ₹6 lakh for 10 kW, including panels, inverter, structure, installation and GST. Homes eligible for PM Surya Ghar get up to ₹78,000 back as subsidy. Prices as of October 2026.

What is the price of a 3 kW solar system with subsidy?

A 3 kW system typically costs ₹1.75 lakh – ₹2.1 lakh before subsidy. With the ₹78,000 PM Surya Ghar subsidy, the effective price comes to about ₹97,000 – ₹1.32 lakh.

What does a single solar panel cost?

A single 540–600 W panel typically costs ₹12,000–₹20,000 depending on technology (Mono PERC, TOPCon, bifacial) and whether it is DCR. Panels are roughly half of a full system’s price; the rest is the inverter, structure, wiring and installation.

What is the installation cost of rooftop solar?

Installation is normally included in the system price quoted by an EPC company like Bhanu. On its own, installation, net-meter work and approvals make up about 8–12% of the total cost.

Is there any running cost after installation?

Very little. Panels need cleaning with plain water every couple of weeks, and the inverter may need replacing once during the system’s 25-year life. There is no fuel cost.

How much does commercial rooftop solar cost per kW?

Commercial and industrial systems do not get the household subsidy, but cost less per kW because they are bigger — typically ₹42,000–₹52,000 per kW for 10–50 kW and ₹32,000–₹40,000 per kW above 100 kW.
